Abstract

In the blast furnace production of phosphorus, the charge consists of tricalcium phosphate, coal and an acid flux in hard lumps, e.g. burnt brick waste, having the composition 5SiO2, 1,5Al2O3. Preferably the calcium phosphate is agglomerated with the coal by mixing and coking. The air enters the furnace at a temperature of between 450 and 550 DEG C. and the reaction commences in a narrow zone just above the level of the tuy<\>geres and is completed in the slag. The height of the charge above the tuy<\>geres should be regulated so that the emerging gases are at a temperature of about 400 DEG C. To prevent the slag from cooling, ferrophosphorus is added to form a layer below the slag, the ferrophosphorus being tapped off at intervals and returned in the charge.
