Abstract
192,816. Dvorkovitz, P. Nov. 17, 1921. Coking processes.-Coal or other carbonaceous material is carbonized at a temperature between 280‹ and 500‹ C. by the passage therethrough of heated gas in such a manner that the heating is greater at the top of the retort than at the bottom end from which the distillates are removed and a yield of hydrocarbons of the paraffin series is obtained. The retorts A which may narrow down gradually from the top to the bottom are set in a heating chamber B communicating by a passage b with a furnace C. A pipe E supplies a heating agent such as hydrogen, producer-gas or coal-gas which is preheated in the furnace C and delivers the heated gas to the top of the retorts. The distillates are taken off by upwardly inclined outlets a<4> and passed through a condenser F having tanks G for collecting the condensates. The furnace gases escape by a pipe D.
