Abstract

Rotary furnaces ; charging and discharging.-Solid fuel is distilled at low temperatures by being heated rapidly to a temperature below that at which hydrocarbon vapours are evolved, the rate of heating being subsequently decreased and maintained sufficient for continuing the distillation. The material is passed through an externally heated retort A<1> in which the preheating takes place, and is discharged through a rotary valve 16 and shoot 14 into a rotary retort A through which it passes being discharged by vanes 24 which drop it into a discharge pipe 21 having a rotary valve 22. The vapours are led off by outlets 17 and 25. The hot gases from the heating space B of the lower retort are passed through conduit 27 to the space B<1> surrounding the upper retort.
