Coking processes.-One or more of a number of externally-heated continuous vertical retorts are charged with coke from which water-gas is obtained by the introduction of steam, the unconsumed coke being subsequently withdrawn. Tar may be fed to a hot zone in the retort where the temperature is sufficient for cracking or gasifying, the water gas and gas obtained from the tar being added to that from the retorts employed in the usual gas-making process. The steam is introduced at the point A above the coke extractor B and tar is fed in through a pipe C which may be water-cooled.
