Coking proceses.-A process for producing water-gas in externally-heated retorts consists in admitting the steam to the charge at various points and levels of the retort. The gases evolved may be removed directly they are formed. The steam, from pipes a<1> and b<l> enters the retort at points d<1> and c<1> respectively, and the gases are withdrawn through openings f<1> leading to the main g<1>, or a central gas withdrawal pipe k<1> may be used. The gases evolved may be superheated and used as described in Specification 204,718 to preheat the fuel in the upper part of the retort before it is admitted to the water-gas making zone. The steam may be admitted alternatively from pipes a<1>and b<1> so that the zones in which the water gas reaction takes place may be varied from zones not being subjected to steaming being reheated before again being steamed. Bulbs h' may be provided on the inner surface of the retort to conduct the steam well into the charge.
