Abstract
172,392. Johns, G. M. Sept. 2, 1920. Carbonizing processes.-Powdered coal, peat, lignite, oil shale &c. are fed through a shoot 20 into an inclined retort having a plane surface 16 heated by the hot gases from a furnace 10. The powdered material is caused to travel down the surface 16 in a layer of substantially uniform thickness by reciprocating blades 18 which also prevent too rapid travel through the retort. The material is heated to a low temperature in the chamber 13 at the rear end of the retort and is more highly heated in the chamber 12 immediately over the furnace 10. The spent material falls into a container 22 and the products of distillation are taken off by pipes 24 leading to a common conduit 25. The degree of fineness of the material is such that approximately 50 per cent passes through a hundred-mesh sieve.
