Abstract
394,747. Gas-producers. JOHNSON, J. Y., 47, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. ; Frankforton-Main, Germany.) Feb. 8, 1932, No. 3693. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii).] In the gasification of solid or semi-solid fuel having a tendency to agglomerate when heated, such as caking coal, or oil-containing residues from heat treatment of coal, or tar, or mineral oils, or from destructive hydrogenation, the fuel in the form of grains, not larger than hazel nuts, are spread on to a glowing layer of fuel in a gas producer. This fuel bed is blown so that it is kept in a movement similar to that of a boiling liquid in the manner described in Specification 214,544, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], the fresh grains remaining separated until they are carbonized by sinking, due to their greater weight, into the glowing coke. When making water gas the caking fuel is introduced only during the "run." The apparatus comprises a fuel hopper D from which the caking fuel is forced by a water-cooled conveyer E through a cooled duct F on to distributing sheets G. The blast is delivered through a pipe A, but when making water gas, during the blow air is blown at low velocity through pipe K. Superheated steam is blown through nozzles L at high pressure to give the fuel the appearance of a boiling liquid.
