Abstract
646,105. Gas-manufacture. HYDROCARBON RESEARCH, Inc. June 7, 1948, No. 15298. Convention date, June 11, 1947. [Class 51 (i)] In the carbonization and gasification of solid carbonaceous material, the gasificatiori is effected exothermically in the chamber 11, and the fresh material, in pulverulent form, is carbonized, by indirect heatexchange with the mass being gasified, in the pipe 19 in which it is entrained in a non-oxidizing gas and delivered to a gassolids separator 21, the coke being delivered to the mass being gasified and the distillation gases being withdrawn through the line 23. The gaseous products of gasification are separately withdrawn through the pipe 25. The non-oxidizing gas, supplied through the pipe 15, may be re-cycle gas; and coke, withdrawn through a pipe 14 and kept in free-flowing condition by a steam supply 14a, may be re-cycled with the gas to prevent agglomeration of the coal in the pipe 19. The coke in the chamber 11 is fluidized by gases, i.e. hydrogen or oxygen-containing gas with or without carbon-dioxide and/or steam, from the pipe 16 and, in cases where excess heat is generated, this is utilized for cracking oil introduced through the pipe 28, or for steam-generation in the coil 27. Coke is withdrawn through the pipe 26. The pipe 19 may be in spiral form, or may be replaced by a series of tubes. The enlarged section 13 of the chamber 11 results in a reduced gas velocity in the upper part of the chamber and reduces the risk of entraining large particles from the mass.
