Abstract

253,878. International Combustion Engineering Corporation, (Assignees of Runge, W.). June 17, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 242,621. Carbonizing pro cesses. - In the process of the parent Specification in which powdered coal is passed through a hot oxidizing gas until the particles are non- coherent, the particles then being carbonized by descent through hot gases, the coal from the preliminary treatment is mixed with pulverized raw coal before carbonization. Coal is pulverized in a mill 1 and conveyed in an air current to a cyclone separator 2 from which it is fed into a retort 9 supplied with air from a heater 10 and at 800‹ F. The non-coherent residue falls on to a conveyer 18 on which it is mixed with raw pulverized coal from a mill 21, cyclone extractor 22 and hopper 20, and the mixed materials are charged by a feeding device 24 into a retort 23 to be carbonized. The hot air in the retort 9 is at an average temperature of 500‹ to 700‹ F., the average temperature in the retort 23 being 1000‹ F. and the coal taking not more than 60 seconds in passing through each of the retorts.
