Abstract

175,319. Roberts, A. Aug. 21, 1920. Drawings to Specification. Coking processes; retorts.-A process for coking coal consists in introducing heat into the mass of the coal so rapidly that the temperature is raised high enough to effect the decomposition of the resinous content of the coal (660‹-750‹ C.) before excessive oxidation or distillation of such content occurs, whereby a cementing or binding material necessary for the production of metallurgical coke is formed. A suitable retort for carrying out this process has a relatively large mass compared to the mass of the charge. and a relatively la.rge area for the transmission of heat to the charge and for absorbing heat from the heating-flues. The retort may have a relatively narrow charge-containing space and may be, in consequence, extended in length.
