Abstract

665,311. Manufacturing coke. COMPAGNIE PAN - EUROPEENNE D'INSTALLATIONS ET D'EQUIPEMENT INDUSTRIELS SOC. A R.L. March 29, 1949 [March 30, 1948; Sept. 27, 1948], Nos. 8514/49 and 8515/49. Class 55 (i). A hard metallurgical coke is produced by heating briquettes consisting mainly of raw or partly distilled coal, the briquettes containing less than 20 per cent and preferably from 12 to 15 per cent of volatile matter, by direct contact with a heating gas, so that their temperature rises at a rate of from 6‹ to 10‹ C. per minute. The briquettes, which may consist of 80 per cent of a semi-coke, 15 per cent of finely-ground caking coal and 5 per cent of pitch, are fed into the top of a coking chamber 1 with perforate walls, which is mounted vertically in an oven A. They pass continuously down through the chamber which is divided into three zones, an upper preheating zone c, a coking zone b and a cooling zone a. Recycled fixed distillation gas, heated to between 1000‹ and 1250 C. is passed into zone b and travels transversely through the mass of briquettes in sufficient volume to give a temperature rise of the mass of 6-10‹ C. per minute. The gas, together with a second stream of the same gas from the cooling zone, then passes into the preheating zone and finally discharges from the oven to pass successively through a dust separator C, a detarrer D, a cooler E, a blower B, a second cooler F and a benzol separator G, surplus gas being withdrawn into a holder H, whilst the remainder is recirculated, part through a heater I to raise its temperature for the coking process, and a second, unheated, part through the cooling zone a wherein it cools the fully coked briquettes. In a modification, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), the hot gases leaving the oven are passed through a lowtemperature distillation retort which produces from coal fines the semi-coke required for the manufacture of the briquettes.
