287,585. Low Temperature Carbonisation, Ltd., and Parker, C. H. Sept. 25, 1926. Coking processes.-In apparatus for the distillation of coal in two stages, in which the charge from a retort in the first stage is transferred to a second retort of large volume so that the second stage is of longer duration than the first and effects cooling of the charge, water is passed into the retort of the second stage or into a cooling receptacle forming an adjunct of such retort. The water may be admitted in parallel streams down the inclined walls of the retort or receptacle and a slight pressure may be maintained to prevent leakage of gas to the quenching chamber.
