Abstract
316,734. International Combustion, Ltd., and McEwen, S. June 8, 1928. Retorts. - In a retort adapted for carbonization or distillation of the kind described in Specification 316,901 in which a wall or part of a wall containing the charge is adapted to move in the direction in which the material travels through the retort, provision is made for withdrawing the distillates from the bottom of the retort so as to increase the yield of fixed gas. The distillates from the charge between the walls b and chain grates a escape into the spaces between the runs of the grates and instead \of passing out through outlets u which in this case are closed by valves, are withdrawn through outlets y in the hoppers w which receive the hot coke from the retorts. A retort according to this construction may be operated either as described in Specification 316,901 or according to the present invention.
