Retort furnaces.-In low temperature carbonizing-apparatus of the kind described in Specifications 223,624, 244,837, and 245,190, the nests of metal retorts are carried by removable supports so that the retort assembly can be readily withdrawn to allow the setting to be used for high temperature carbonization. The lower ends of the retorts fit into recesses b in an apertured plate a supported on castings c bolted to the substructure of the setting, while the upper ends are positioned by an apertured plate h seated on the inner walls g. The gas space 16 is enclosed by a frame j with removable covers i. The walls g form an upwardly tapering chamber which can be used for high temperature carbonization when the retorts 2, top and bottom plates a, h, and castings c are removed.
