Abstract

487,713. Low-temperature carbonization. GROVES. W. W. (Otto & Co., Ges., Dr. C.) April 20, 1937, No. 11264. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] In the coking of fuel in externally heated, horizontal intermittently operated chamber ovens disposed between heating flues and separated therefrom by refractory walls and within which containers for the fuel are inserted, the containers each consist of vertical metal members connected by horizontal metal plates which subdivide the chambers vertically and form base-plates for a number of compartments, the vertical plates interlocking with similar parts of adjacent containers to form continuous metal walls. The apparatus is operated for obtaining medium or low temperature coke by maintaining the usual high temperatures in the heating chambers such as over 1000‹ C. for a period until the temperature of the coke approximates to the final temperature of the coke obtaining in medium or low temperature coking, such as about 700 and. 500‹ C. respectively. In an example, with regard to coal of volatile content of 30-31 per cent, the flue temperature and the mean end temperature of the coke were 1200 and 560‹ C. respectively, the coking time being 5 hours. The containers may have the vertical sides 2 and the horizontal plates 1 integral with additional transverse walls, or the sides and transverse walls may be integral and rest loosely on the horizontal plates. In the latter construction a pair of central walls may be constructed integrally with the side and transverse walls, gases entering the same through slots. The tops of the side walls are undulatory, the troughs thereof allowing gases to pass into the spaces between the vertical walls and the oven sides. In a modification, the vertical and horizontal walls are constituted by I-beams 31, Fig. 4c, fitting firmly in the ovens, and are provided with a cover in two parts, namely, a frame 34 with transverse walls and a perforated chamotte plate 36 ribbed if desired. A single column of containers may be discharged from an oven by a plunger into a car 16, Fig. 8, running on rails 15 and provided with apertured channels 19 on its sides down which cooling water flows. With the containers having fixed base-plates in the ovens, a vertically adjustable plunger 24, Fig. 9, pushes the covering frame and lid over a collecting car 25 on to the supporting rollers 27 of another car 30, Fig. 11, the rollers being arranged in steps as shown. Suitable dimensions for the containers are specified. Powdered or briquetted fuel may be Inserted in the containers, the briquettes being formed by addition of clay, pitch, or sulphite waste liquor.
