Retorts. - In the distillation of coal or lignite in chambers separated by hollow or solid heating partitions, the coal is continuously forced in a horizontal direction through the chambers which are subdivided by grids, and which are only a fraction of their height in length. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, distillation chambers c alternate with heating chambers b traversed by hot gases, and the material is forced through the distilling chambers c which are subdivided by plates p, by a rotating drum c which is mounted eccentrically on an axis m. The coke is removed from the lower part of a surrounding chamber k and the distillates escape through holes i in the outer shell a. In Fig. 4, heating plates b<1> separate the charges in two sets of rotating chambers c which are so arranged that the charge falling between these sets is forced through the distillation chambers, the coke falling into the interior spaces k. A pusher e<1>, Fig. 5, may be used to force the coal through the distillation chambers c to the coke chamber k, grid plates p being used to divide the chambers c horizontally.
