Retort furnaces.-The producer A of a gas-re tort setting is arranged externally to and independent of the setting, the space in the settin; which it would otherwise occupy being devoted to extension of the regenerator B which is arranged to preheat both the producer gas and the secondary air or either of them. The re generator instead of being, as shown, confined to the area of the setting, may extend to one o both sides thereof. The main flue C may be sunk below ground level.
