Abstract

272,766. Menell, G. Nov. 20, 1926. Retorts. - A vertical retort for the extraction of oil from bituminous materials such as shale, coal, peat, or the like comprises a flattened narrow chamber formed by end walls 2, and side walls 1 to which sloping plates 3 are secured down which the material slides. The retorts may be either internally or externally heated or by a combination of these methods. The upper part is shown as externally heated, and the lower part internally heated by the injection of superheated steam and gas through pipes 9 beneath the plates. Upwardly inclined gas outlets 8 are arranged below the plates and the material is charged and discharged by rotary cylinders 4 having recesses for the material.
