504,349. Carbonizing asphalt material. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Oct. 19, 1937, No. 28465. [Class 55 (i)] [Also in Group III] Oily residues such as are obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of coal, tar, or mineral oil are subjected to lowtemperature carboniza-, tion in a rotating drum containing hollow sharpedged filler bodies. As shown, the fillers are tubes with opposite ends flattened in planes at right angles. The hollow fillers may have reinforcing inserts, e.g. of iron, or they may be wholly or partly filled with lighter substances, e.g. sand, ceramic material, coke, or residues from the process. Bodies of different size and shape may be used in different compartments of the same drum.
