Discharging; cooling discharged materials.- In apparatus for coking bituminous fuel the charge is fed into vertical narrow chambers a having hinged bottom doors c operated by shafts f to discharge the coke into bunkers g filled with an inert gas through pipes h. This gas serves to cool the coke and may then be used to heat the charge. Each set of chambers is charged in turn from a coal bunker i. The coke is cooled in 'a bunker g<1>, Fig. 4, by spraying with water and by circulation of gases by a pump t<1>, the water being admitted by a pipe u<1>. The bunker may be movable and connected with the discharge chamber q of the retort chambers by a liquid seal w.
