Abstract

A carbon or graphite article is made by baking a mixture of carbon or graphite, a carbonizable binder, and an amount of silicon, ferro-silicon, and/or silicon dioxide equivalent to 2-5% of silicon based on the weight of carbon or graphite. The silicic material may have a particle size of less that 0,074 mm. A mixture comprising petroleum coke flour of particle size less than 0,208 mm. and pitch may be baked at 1,100 DEG C. Examples are given and a comparison is made between the addition of silicon and nickel, zinc, chromium or copper.
