Abstract

A mixture of finely powdered carbon and a binder is shaped by moulding or extrusion, baked in a substantially pressure-tight container, and then graphitized in known manner. According to the example, a mixture of coke and pitch is extruded in the form of a cylinder, is placed in a dense graphite container having a screw-threaded graphite plug and is packed with carbon grist. After the plug is tightly fitted, the container is baked for 7 days, the temperature being slowly raised to 1000 DEG C. The resulting carbon mass has an apparent density of 1.635. On graphitizing at 2700 DEG C. for one hour, the apparent density increases to 1.73. Specifications 1188/14 [Class 90] and 742,521 are referred to.
