Abstract

Graphite is produced by adding sulphur to pitch or bitumen, refluxing, e.g. at 250 DEG C, to give a mass in which the ratio of S atoms/total atoms is 0.8 x 10-2-11 x 10-2, then carbonizing to remove all the S, and graphitizing. The S is said to be incorporated into a carbon ring structure. Carbonization may be effected at 520 DEG C. under 500 p.s.i.g., then at 900-1000 DEG C. under atmospheric pressure, and finally at 1300 DEG C. The core is then ground, mixed with pitch and graphitized. The product has a coefficient of volume thermal expansion of 7.5 x 10-6-15.14 x 10-6/ DEG C., and an isotropy ratio of 1.04-1.2.
