Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a carbonaceous material having strength and density higher than conventional one by a method wherein pulverized raw coke is pressed and molded using pitch or the like, sintered at a specified temperature, impregnated with pitch under high pressure, and sintered at high temperatures to effect carbonization or graphitization.
CONSTITUTION: Normal, cheap coke is used as raw material. Pulverized coke, as such or compounded with binder pitch, is molded under high pressure, and is subjected to a primary sintering at 450W700°C which is far lower than conventional sintering temperature. The sintered coke is then impregnated with pitch under pressure and is subjected a high-temperature sintering process to effect carbonization or graphitization. The process, without necessity of conventional, complex repetition process and by use of cheap coke, provides a carbonaceous material with high strength, high density, excellent oxidation resistance, small resistivity, and thus having a wide range of application such as graphite material for unclear reactor.
