Abstract

1,149,047. Graphite articles. FORDATH Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968 [20 Oct., 1966], No. 46896/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division H5] Graphite articles are made by carbonizing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing a hydrocarbon vapour, a mixture of graphite and a resinous binder which has been moulded to the required shape and cured. Carbon is deposited on the article by cracking the hydrocarbon vapour, and the object is degassed by heating at a low pressure. The resinous binder is preferably a phenolic novolak and is used in such proportions that it forms about 10% by weight of'the mixture. A curing agent may be added to the resinous binder, and the mould may conveniently be cured by heating at a temperature of 120‹ to 180‹ C., and a pressure of 1500 p.s.i. The carbonization is preferably carried out in nitrogen at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature between 800‹ and 900‹ C. The hydrocarbon vapour used is preferably benzene. The degassing may conveniently be carried out at a pressure of 5 mm. Hg. and a temperature of 1000‹ to 1400‹C. The example describes' the manufacture of an electrode for use with a spark erosion machine.
