Abstract

A nuclear fuel material comprising a mixture of SiC and a carbide of a fissile or fertile material is made by forming finely divided particles of the silicide of the fissile or fertile material and then carburizing the silicide. The fissile or fertile material, e.g. U, Th, Pu, is arc melted with Si to form the silicide, which is crushed to 100-500m and is carburized in a methane-hydrogen or other reducing atmosphere, preferably at 1600 DEG C. or above; alternatively the silicide may be mixed with graphite and heated.
