Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain spherical carbon or spherical activated carbon of such a large grain size that was not obtd. formerly in a high yield by melting and dispersion- granulating special starting material pitch in a dispersion solvent contg. a suspending agent in the presence of a fibrous substance followed by carbonization and activation.
CONSTITUTION: Petroleum or coal pitch contg. carbon 80W96.5wt% and a nitrobenzene insol. component 0W50wt% and having an H to C atomic ratio of 0.2W25 and a softening point of 50W350°C is mixed with a fibrous substance, in a ratio of 100/0.1W100/10 by wt., consisting of one or more kinds of fibers such as org. flame- resistant infusible fiber and carbon fiber and having a fiber length to diameter ratio of 5W500. This mixt. is melted and dispersion-granulated in a known dispersion solvent contg. a dispersant and a suspending agent. The fibrous substance facilitates homogenization and an increase in grain size, so a large grain size can be attained even from starting material pitch, and spherical carbon or spherical activated carbon of a large grain size fit for industrial uses is obtd. in a high yield through carbonization and activation processes.
