827,763. Furnace electrodes. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORPORATION. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 23, 1956], No. 4574/57. Class 39(3) A threaded carbon member for connecting correspondingly threaded carbon electrodes is characterized in that it is partly impregnated from the surface inwardly and to the extent of from about 10% to 75% of the total available porosity with a liquefiable carbonizable composition, e.g. tar, pitch, or synthetic resin. As shown, a threaded graphite nipple 11 is partly impregnated as at 14 and 16 with, for example, coal tar pitch for a distance of about half the longitudinal and radial axes thereof, the inner pores 15 containing entrapped air or other gas. The impregnation may be effected by immersing the nipple in a coal tar pitch having a softening point between about 60‹C to 120‹ C and maintaining a temperature of about 250‹C and a pressure of 50 lbs. per square inch Specifications 670,162 and 760,187 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 744,208.
