Abstract

A graphite article is produced by successively baking and graphitizing a mixture of artificial graphite, carbon black, and a carbonizable binder, substantially all of the graphite particles having a particle size below 1,000 microns but at least 50% thereof having a particle size above 50 microns and the carbon black having an average particle size of 0,2-0,7 micron. Preferably, substantially all the graphite particles have a particle size below 300 microns and the carbon black has an average particle size of 0,3 micron. The ratio of graphite to carbon black may be 3-1 to 1-2. The binder may be pitch or furfuryl alcohol optionally containing furfuryl aldehyde. From 21 to 23% of pitch, in conjunction with a ratio of graphite to carbon black of 2 to 1, or 18-20% of furfuryl alcohol, in conjunction with a ratio of graphite to carbon black of 3 to 2, is preferably employed. Baking may be effected at a temperature up to 1,000 DEG C. Using pitch as binder, baking may be effected at a constant pneumatic pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g. or at atmospheric pressure with mechanical restraint. Graphitizing may be effected at a temperature of 2,000-3,000 DEG C. The baked carbon may have a density of up to 1,79 gm./c.c. and the graphitized carbon up to 1,90 gm./c.c. The Darcy fluid permeability of the graphitized carbon may be 0,07-0,2X10-12 sq. cm. Examples are given.
