Abstract

The permeability of a porous carbon article is reduced by depositing carbon in the pores of the article from furfuryl alcohol, in one stage, and from a gaseous or vaporous hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, in another stage, the stages being carried out in either order. In the first mentioned stage, which may be in accordance with Specification 901,847, the article is impregnated with furfuryl alcohol which is then successively polymerized and carbonized. In the second mentioned stage, which may be in accordance with Specification 881,404, the article is heated in a moving stream of a hydrocarbon gas or vapour at a steady temperature between 500 DEG and 1500 DEG C. at atmospheric or sub-atmospheric pressure, the flow rate and partial pressure of the gas or vapour being controlled so as to prevent deposition of soot on the article. The furfuryl alcohol may contain acetone and a wetting agent. Phosphoric acid may be introduced into the article during the first mentioned stage. The permeability may be reduced to 1 X 10-8 cm.2/sec. Examples are given. Specification 861,376 also is referred to.
