Abstract

Boron nitride fibre material is produced by depositing a coating of boron nitride (BN) on carbon fibre and subsequently heating the thus-coated fibre in a gas, eg air, which reacts with carbon to drive off the carbon as a gaseous product and leave substantially hollow boron nitride fibre constituted by the coating. The BN may be deposited by reacting boron trifluoride with ammonia at elevated temperature. The carbon fibre may be a porous mass, such as a felt or fabric, and the resulting BN fibre mass may be impregnated by further deposition of BN to produce a dense, solid, BN-BN composite material.
