Abstract

Carbon loss at high temperatures in elemental carbon (e.g graphite) is reduced by treatment (coating, immersion or vacuum-impregnation) with silica sol. and heating to convert the SiO2 partly or wholly to silicon carbide. The temperature of heating may be from 1500 DEG -2200 DEG C., preferably from 1700 DEG -2000 DEG C. The material may be treated at the same time with a wetting agent. The deposition of Si or SiO in vapour form and the formation of silicon carbide by heating in SiO2 granules are referred to.
