Abstract

Shaped bodies of silicon carbide are prepared by heating a shaped body of graphite, which may contain SiC, in an atmosphere containing silicon subhalide. The graphite body may be shaped pure graphite or shaped commercial SiC from which Si has at least partially been removed by treatment with Cl2 or silicon tetrahalide at above 1000 DEG C. The silicon subhalide, e.g. SiCl2, or SiBr2, is produced from Si and SiCl4 or SiBr4 respectively, and passed, if desired with H2 or A, over the graphite body at 1300-1400 DEG C. In preparing the subhalide, the silicon tetrahalide may be replaced wholly or partially by halogen or hydrogen halide, e.g. Br2 and HBr in A.
