Abstract

1343773 Fibre reinforced graphite structures UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 27 April 1971 [5 May 1970] 21655/70 Heading C1A Carbon fibre reinforced graphite articles are produced by impregnating a bundle of aligned carbon fibres with a liquid comprising a heat curable resin, heating the impregnated bundle to convert the liquid resin to a viscous material which binds the fibres together, shaping the resultant mass, heating it to completely cure the resin, and then carbonizing and graphitizing in non-oxidizing atmospheres. Before the initial resin treatment, the surfaces of the fibres used may be oxidized possibly by heating in air, e.g. at 400-600‹ C., or by immersing in a solution of an oxidizing agent, e.g. an aqueous solution of nitric acid or sodium hypochlorite. If desired before resin impregnation, and before or after surface oxidation the fibre may be immersed in a solution of a carbide forming element e.g. B, Be, Na or Si. The fibre bundle may be compression moulded and the shaping pressure may be maintained during the heating step required to hard cure the resin. Suitable resins are given and include coal tar pitch. The carbon body formed may be further impregnated with resin which may be cured and carbonized. If desired, after hard curing, the bundle may be further heated in air, e.g. at 200‹ C. to substantially eliminate volatile materials without any substantial loss by oxidation. Graphite powder or carbon black may be dispersed in the uncured resin.
