Abstract

1304693 Coating fibres with metal DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 14 May 1970 [16 May 1969] 25061/69 Heading C7F A fibre of e.g. boron, carbon alumina or silicon carbide is coated with e.g. Al by decomposition of e.g. triisobutyl aluminium, whilst passing it through a reaction chamber, and heating the fibre by conduction from a heated member. As shown in Fig.1 the member may be a belt 13 which is heated by a resistance heater 13. To prevent the fibre and the belt from sticking together either a doctor blade 24 is provided or a separating belt of e.g. silicon rubber, steel, Cu, Ni or Al or a powder, e.g. Al, may be arranged between the belt and the fibre, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). In modifications either a single roller, Fig. 5 (not shown) or double rollers, Fig.6 (not shown) may be used in place of the belt. Both sides of the fibre may be coated, Fig.4 (not shown).
