Abstract

1448732 Sintering silicon nitride LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 Feb 1974 [10 April 1973] 17032/73 Heading C7D Articles formed of or containing silicon nitride are made by sintering, the material being protected during sintering by a medium containing boron nitride and a substance which provides a silicon mononide vapour pressure greater than that of the said material in the sintering conditions, e.g. silica or a silicate. The material being sintered may be surrounded by a graphite component which is also provided with a protective coating which may include boron nitride, alumina or aluminium nitride. In an example a ceramic crucible is formed of a mixture of 79% silicon nitride, 10% aluminium nitride, 6% alumina and 5% magnesium oxide. The mix is isostatically cold-pressed, coated to a depth of 0À01-0À02 inch with an acetone suspension of silica with up to 80% of boron nitride, buried in boron nitride powder in a graphite die and heated to 1700‹C over 1 hour, the temperature being raised to 1850‹C over 20 minutes and held for a further hour.
