Abstract

1467457 Making silicon nitride composites FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 52355/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] A triple density Si 3 N 4 article such as a gas turbine rotor is made by the following series of steps: (a) a first shape, e.g. the rotor hub is made by hot pressing a powder mixture of 95-99À5% Si 3 N 4 and 5-0À5% of a densification aid such as MgO; (b) a second shape, e.g. the outer blade ring, is made by injection moulding Si powder in a carrier, e.g. thermoplastic resin and heating to remove the carrier; (c) a third shape is formed by slip casting a Si slurry and sintering in an inert atmosphere, e.g. at 980- 1180‹ C.; (d) the second and third shapes are then bonded together by slip casting a Si slurry between the two adjoining faces and then nitriding the assembly; (e) the first shape is joined to the surface of the third shape by hot pressing, e.g. at 1625-1700‹ C. and 1000-3000 p.s.i.
