Abstract

1466249 Vacuum sintering of steel powder EDGAR ALLEN TOOLS Ltd 20 Dec 1974 [30 Oct 1973] 50460/73 Heading C7D Pre-alloyed steel powder of irregular particle shape, e.g. atomized powder, is annealed in a vacuum or purified H2, cold pressed and finally sintered under vacuum. The annealing and sintering processes remove most of the oxygen content in the powders, e.g. 89-93% in the Examples, and compacts having densities greater than 98% of theoretical density are produced. The preferred annealing treatment is carried out in H 2 at 900‹C for 1 hour followed by cooling at no more than 50‹C/hr to below 600‹C. The pressing may be by isostatic compaction. Pressing preferably takes place at 1200‹ to 1350‹C for 1 hour in a vacuum between 10<SP>-1</SP> Torr and 10<SP>-5</SP> Torr.
