Abstract

1324210 Cemented titanium carbide NETHERLANDS APPLIED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH FOR INDUSTRY TRADE & COMMERCE 18 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 53531/71 Headings C7A and C7D A TiC based hard metal is made from a powder mixture of TiC and at least 4% weight Ti-Ni intermetallic compound which is hot pressed in vacuum or inert atmosphere at 150 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> minimum and above 1315‹C. The TiC powder is less than 20 microns e.g. 3-20 microns, and the Ti-Ni less than 50 microns e.g. 4-50 microns. The powder mixture preferably containing 4-30% Ti-Ni is hot pressed for 10-30 minutes at 1375-1400‹C. at 200 Kg/cm<SP>2</SP>. The powder mixture may be formed by wet milling the powders in pentane, hexane, acetone or trichloroethylene. The sintered carbide is used for throw away tips, punches, dies and warheads.
