Abstract
1,196,767. Powder extrusion production of magnesium base alloys. DOW CHEMICAL CO. July 26, 1967 [Aug. 3, 1966], No.34405/67. Headings C7A and C7D. Process for the production of an alloy comprising:- the balance, apart from impurities, being Mg; comprises coating pellets of a Mg-base alloy containing Zr with fine Al particles, compacting the pellets at 260-425 C., heat treating the compact for 1 hour to 4 days at 340-480 C., comminuting the compact, mixing the alloy particles with 10-90% (based on the final alloy) of Mg-base alloy pellets containing at least one of Ca, R. E. and Th and preferably containing Zr and extruding the mixture at at least 260C. to form a coherent body. The final body is characterized by a sound heterogeneous microstructure consisting 10-90% of a first Mg-Al-Zr alloy phase with an average grain diameter less than 5Á and a second Mg alloy, containing one or more of Ca, R.E. and Th, discontinuous phase intimately dispersed therewith. Also it has high compression yield strength and resistance to creep extension. In an alternative embodiment the Al powder coated particles may be mixed with the Ca, R. E. or Th containing alloy particles, the mixture compacted at 260- 425C. , heat treated at 340-480 C., and then extruded at 260-425 C., with a reduction ratio of at least 5:1.
