Abstract

1431528 Induction sintering ferrous metal compacts GLEASON WORKS 4 Oct 1974 [15 Oct 1973] 43204/74 Addition to 1407557 Heading C7D Powder metal, particularly ferrous compacts are sintered by first pre-treating in a magnetic field with a frequency high enough to induce a current in the compact to a depth not exceeding “ the maximum compact thickness in order to reduce the electrical resistivity of the compact and then raising to sintering temperature by subjecting it to a magnetic field with a lower frequency than the first. The pre-treating is preferably effected in a R.F. magnetic field not less than 50 KHz e.g. 50-450 KHz and the sintering is effected in a magnetic field frequency of 1-10 KHz. Only selected portions of the compact may be pretreated in the R.F. magnetic field e.g. a smaller diameter portion so that when the compact is finally sintered in a lower frequency induction coil of constant diameter uniform heating is effected due to the reduced time of induction heating response of the pre-treated smaller diameter. Bevel and spun gears are produced from isostatically or mechanically pressed compacts of Fe powder to which is added 0À2-0À8% graphite.
