Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a Ti-Ni shape memory alloy having high density and excellent in shape memory effect, by packing a powder mixture consisting of Ti, Ni, and additive carbon in a metallic cylindrical body, heating the above cylindrical body while sucking and evacuating the inside, and then subjecting the above cylindrical body to extrusion or forging. CONSTITUTION:A carbon powder is mixed by 0.02-0.3wt.% with a powdery raw material principally composed of Ti powder and Ni powder. The resulting Ti-Ni-C powder mixture 4 is packed, in the above state or after compacted, in a metallic cylindrical body 1 in which one end is closed. Subsequently, while sucking and evacuating the inside of the metallic cylindrical body 1 from another end via a pipe 2 by means of an exhaust pump 3, the metallic cylindrical body is heated to 800-1,200 deg.C. Then, after the generation of CO and/or CO2 gas is finished, another end is hermetically sealed. This hermetically sealed metallic cylindrical body 1 is extruded or forged in the above heated state, and then the above metallic cylindrical body 1 is removed. By this method, the Ti-Ni shape memory alloy having high density, uniform composition, and superior shape memory effect, minimal in oxygen content, and excellent in plastic workability and fatigue characteristics can be obtained.
