Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the compactibility and compressibility of a powder material and obtain a sintered high alloy tool steel having a high density by a method wherein a mixture of a low-C tool steel powder with a required amount of a graphite powder is compacted, and a reducing gas is introduced and the pressure inside a furnace is controlled during the sintering of the compact.
CONSTITUTION: To a powder of a tool steel, specifically a low-C high speed steel containing 0.2W0.8wt% of fixed carbon, a graphite powder is mixed in such an amount as to meet the C content requirement after sintering, and the mixture of the powders is compacted. In a part or the entire part of a sintering process of the compact, a reducing gas such as CO is introduced into a furnace, the pressure inside the furnace is controlled at 0.2W500 Torr and the compact is sintered by raising the temperature to about 1,200W1,300°C. In this process, the amount of dissolved C in the alloy powder is reduced to lower the hardness of the powder and improve the compactibility and compressibility of the powder, and the residual oxygen content is lowered by appropriately selecting the reducing-type sintering conditions, thereby obtaining a sintered high alloy tool steel having a high density. The sintered tool steel has a cutting capability comparable or superior to that of a corresponding tool steel produced by melting.
