Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain high purity nitride by regulating grain size distribution and temp. when IVA and VA group element oxide powder is mixed with carbon powder, and the mixt. is reacted in a N2 or NH3 gas stream.
CONSTITUTION: IVA and VA group element oxide powder is mixed with carbon powder in an amt. of 90W110% of the theoretical amt. for reducing the oxygen to obtain granulated powder having 80% or more of a 0.1W5mm diametrical grain size distribution. This powder is then reacted at 1700°C or above in a N2 or NH3 gas stream using a revolving furnace provided with a known graphite cylinder. By this method the residual oxygen content is lowered, and high purity nitride can be obtd. efficiently without forming carbide.
