Abstract

PURPOSE: Specific amounts of C, SiC or a powder converting into SiC at elevated temperature are added to methyl silicate and the resultant powder mixture is subjectd to reductive carbonization in an inert atmosphere at a prescribed temperature to produce a powder of fine and narrow-distribution particle size.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl silicate 1pt. is mixed with 0.1W1pt. carbon powder and 0.005W1pts. SiC powder or a powder converting into SiC at elevated temperature, such as polycarbosilane. Then, the mixture is heated at 1,200W1,600°C in an inert gas or carbon-containing atmosphere to effect reductive carbonization. Thus, a powder of fine and uniform size and uniform shape is obtained.
