Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high grade silicon nitride powder of high α-type silicon nitride content in a high yield by mixing Si powder, C, powder and silicon nitrogenimide powder in a fixed ratio and heat treating the mixed powder to remarkably accelerate reduction of the Si.
CONSTITUTION: Si powder, C powder and silicon nitrogenimide (SiN)2NH powder are mixed in a ratio of 1:0.4W0.005W2:0.005W2 by wt. The mixed powder is then reduction nitrided in an atmosphere of N2 or NH3 at 1350W1500°C to obtain α- type silicon nitride powder. The raw materials used are pref. above about 99% in purity. The particle size of the Si and C is pref. below 0.1 μm in average diameter and that of the nitrogenimide below 0.2 μm. This method is suitable for production of silicon nitride powder as raw material for silicon nitride type sintered structural material requiring heat resistance and high strength at high temp.
