Abstract
A refractory material is composed of two components, one a silicide of a melting point above 1400 DEG C. and 10 to 70 per cent of which is silicon and the remainder one or more of the metals W, Mo, Cr, Ta, Nb, V, Hf, Zr and Ti and constituting 20-99 per cent of the refractory material; the other, forming 1-80 per cent of the material, an oxide of a melting point above 1400 DEG C. whereof 1 to 100 per cent consists of silica, and if less than 100 per cent, the balance is one or more oxides of Al, Be, Ca, Cr, Hf, Mg, Ti, Zr, Th, Y, Ce and other rare earth metals. The particle size is, on average, less than 10 microns. The silica may be added as an organic (which then serves as a green binder) or inorganic, e.g., water glass compound which on heating gives silica. Sintering is conducted in the presence of free silica or a molten mass rich in silica. Preferably 60-100 per cent of the silicide component is molybdenum disilicide.
