Abstract

A sintered refractory nitride containing a substantial proportion of silicon nitride and/or silicon oxynitride is formed by sintering in a nitrogen containing atmosphere a mixture of SiO2 or SiO2 containing or SiO2 forming material with a metal or metalloid e.g. Al, Ti, Be, Mg, Zr, Ta, Nb, rare earths and B the oxide of which is more stable than SiO2, and the amount of SiO2 present being sufficient to convert most of the metal or metalloid to the corresponding oxide. The SiO2 required may be present as an organo-silicon compound binder e.g. ethyl silicate. In the examples a mixture of SiC, SiO2, Al and ethyl silicate. In the examples a mixture of SiC, SiO2, Al and ethyl silicate is fired up to 1450 DEG C. in nitrogen.ALSO:A sintered refractory nitride containing a substantial proportion of silicon nitride and/or silicon oxynitride is formed by sintering in a nitrogen containing atmosphere a mixture of SiO2 or SiO2 containing or SiO2 forming materia with a metal or metalloid, e.g. Al, Ti, Be, Mg, Zr, Ta, Nb, rare earths and B the oxide of which is more stable than SiO2, and the amount of SiO2 present being sufficient to convert most of the metal or metalloid to the corresponding oxide. The SiO2 required may be present as an organosilicon compound binder, e.g. ethyl silicate. In the examples a mixture of SiC, SiO2, Al and ethyl silicate is fired up to 1450 DEG C. in nitrogen.
