1,054,631. Refractory nitrides. MORGANITE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Jan. 22, 1964 [Jan. 31, 1963], No. 4037/63. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] A sintered refractory nitride with a refractory oxide bond is produced by firing in an oxygen containing or inert atmosphere a shaped mixture of the powdered nitride and a binder solution which is hydrolysable or decomposable to give a temporary bond and forms a refractory oxide bond on firing. Alternatively, the nitride may be formed in situ by firing the mixture containing the nitrideforming element in a nitrogen atmosphere. The nitrides may be those of Si, Al, B, Be, Mg, Cr, Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb and the rare earths. The binders may be hardenable organo silicon compounds such as alkyl silicate esters, e.g. ethyl silicate, organic aluminium compounds such as aluminium acetate or aluminium chloracetate and compounds such as magnesium oxychloride and magnesium oxysulphate. The amount of binder should be sufficient to produce at least 2% oxide after firing, preferably enough to form 5-15% oxide. The powder mixture may also contain additives such as SiC and carbon. The following examples are given: (1) a mixture of powdered Si 3 N 4 ethyl silicate, ethyl alcohol, HCl and a gelling accelerator triethanolamine is shaped and fired in air or in carbon at 1350‹ C.; (2) a mixture of Si, SiC and ethyl silicate as in (1) is fired in nitrogen at 1450‹ C.; (3) a mixture of SiC, Al, LiF and ethyl silicate as in (1) is fired at 1450‹ C. in nitrogen. (4) a mixture of Si, aluminium acetate and CaF2 is fired at 1450‹ C. in nitrogen.
