Abstract

1,249,779. Dense ceramics. DOW CORNING CORP. 10 Feb., 1970 [23 April, 1969], No. 6281/70. Heading ClJ. Low porosity ceramics are obtained by mixing in per cent b.w. 3 to 30 of a silicone having 1 to 3 H atoms or organic radicles per Si atom, the radicles being composed of C and H Œ O and N and having no more than 18 atoms exclusive of H per radicle; with 70 to 97 of a filler consisting of 95 to 10 of a refractory of melting and decomposition points, if any, above 538‹ C., and from 5 to 90 of a Pb-, Na- and K-free vitrifiable composition of fusion point below 1537‹ C. and below any melting and decomposition points of the refractory; shaping, heating to at least partially cure the silicone and then heating to above fusion point of the vitrifiable composition but below any melting or decomposition points of the refractory and not more than 1537‹ C. The vitrifiable composition can be a B 2 O 3 - containing glass frit and can also contain a flux, e.g. BaSO 4 , BaF 2 , BaCrO 4 , LiCO 3 , CaSO 4 and Ca and Li aluminosilicates. Refractories specified are Al 2 O 3 , Al, Mg, Zr and Ti silicates, MgO, ThO 2 , ZnO, SiC, WC, TiC, MoC, BeO, SiO 2 , TiO 2 , Si 3 N 4 , BN and ZrO 2 , singly or in any combination. Curing agents are listed and are optional for the silicone.
